They were pretty different processes for me. The racial thing had a lot to do with my family, and was much more a group process in terms of coming to terms with what we are. It was very much me, and my sister, and even my mom to some degree, because she didnât really recognize herself as Asian. ⦠My sexuality was definitely more of a personal process. I came to them from really different places. (Interview transcripts)
Regardless of whether their racial and sexual identity formation processes were similar or different, all of the participants understood or defined themselves in terms of all of their identities (though one may be prioritized in certain settings or times). While all understood their bisexual and biracial-multiracial identities as compatible, complementary, and/or overlapping, they felt that they were confusing, or âproblematized,â by outsiders (Dajenya 1995:236).
The participants find their identities compatible and integrated. They define themselves in relation to their position outside narrow categories. They use terms such as âhodge podge,â âmixed,â and âqueerâ to describe their complexity. They have difficulties with other peopleâs perceptions of them, their misunderstandings, and their demands for simplification or explanation. While participants most often see themselves within the context of all of their overlapping identities, the larger culture is focused on singular identities. We now turn to see the ways in which these singular identities are constructed and how participantsâ self-understanding is contextualized against this backdrop.
